Red Ribbon Week

We had a wonderful pep rally this morning to kick off Red Ribbon Week. We enjoyed seeing and hearing from Valley Point Middle cheerleaders and their commitment to be drug free. What a great example they were for our 3rd graders! We will be learning about saying no to drugs and celebrating the whole week.

Monday- Wear red
Tuesday- Wear sports attire
Wednesday- Wear gloves
Thursday- Wear school colors or a Dug Gap shirt
Friday- Wear a cap to "Put a cap on drugs"!

Week of October 20-24

Wow! What an INCREDIBLY busy week we are having! Report cards go home today (Tues.) and I will be meeting with some of you parents tomorrow after early dismissal. If you decide you need to meet with me at a different/later time, just let me know.

Charlotte's Web Fair
I sent home information yesterday about the Charlotte's Web Fair. We will be doing the fair during math and science night on October 30th at 6:00. Please let me know if you would be interested in helping us out that night supervising students as they man their games/booths.

WE NEED TONS AND TONS OF CANDY! PLLEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSSEEEEEEEE!!!! :)

FIELD TRIP TO NEW ECHOTA
I forgot to send it home yesterday, but tonight with yoru student's report card you will receive a field trip permission slip for New Echota on November 4th. Students must learn about the Appalachian mountains and geographic landforms in Social Studies.

AR News
We also are tracking AR points for reading. This is why this reading log is so important EVERY NIGHT. Please make sure that your child is reading for 15-20 minutes and logging this on their sheet in their blue folder. You will be be able to see where your child is point wise on a display outside of the gym and music room by the end of the week. Students are supposed to have 6 points by the end of each 9 weeks. So next time, they should have 12 for a total of 24 by the year end.

More to come...

Ugly Mug Coffee

Beginning today, Dug Gap PTO is doing a fundraiser with the Ugly Mug Coffee company based in Memphis, TN. This is a wonderful fundraiser as it not only helps our school, but it also helps a cause. I am sending home packets with your child today that contain information for selling. Ugly Mug also offers hot chocolate and chai tea. Please help out our school and enjoy a cup of joe!

UPDATE: I tried the "Saving Grace" flavor/blend of Ugly Mug coffee this morning and it was FANTASTIC! You know you want some! Give it a try!

October 6th - October 10th

This week is sure to be a busy week in our class! I have sent home a newsletter with students tonight. We will be continuing to study the concepts behind multiplication. We are working on the cumulative facts from 0-4.

In reading class, we are working on distinguishing between statements that are facts and opinions. We are reading about the Titanic, glaciers, and icebergs. We are also doing ongoing reading from Charlotte's Web. Ask your 3rd grader about these cool stories!

In language, we are working on singular and plural nouns and we are focusing on writing narratives. Students need to understand that narratives must have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Please be sure that your student is reading for 15-20 minutes and recording what they read in their reading logs nightly. Please talk with students about what they read. Quiz them on spelling words, and quiz their multiplication fact knowledge. I have sent home multiplication charts with all students. Checking your student's book bag regularly provides accountability for them in relaying information to you.

Just a reminder...fall break (Oct. 10-14) begins this Friday and students will return to school next Wednesday. Plan to spend some time with your child over this break.
